Ayashi no Ceres

The series by Yuu Watase follows the story of Mikage Aya, a girl whose life was changed forever when the tennyo (celestial maiden) Ceres awoke in her body. Ceres' murderous intent against the Mikage family due to an ancient grievance made her dangerous to her family, who sought to kill her. Thus Aya began her search for Ceres' manna, which would let her return to the heavens where she belonged.

Shuro and Kei
Tsukasa Shuro and Tsukasa Kei were first introduced in book 6 of the series Ayashi no Ceres (or episde 22 of the anime) as the famous male singing duo GeSANG, and their story spans the entire book 6. Tsukasa mentioned briefly on air that he was a tennyo descendent and his family possessed a hagoromo, which caused Aya and her friends to search out GeSANG in the hope of finding Ceres' manna.

Aya inadvertently finds out that Shuro is in fact female, and was raised as a male to prevent her tennyo blood from awakening and returning to the heavens. She and Kei have a falling out due to her wish to leave GeSANG, with Kei using her feelings for him against her.

Meanwhile, Kagami has released a drug that awakens those with tennyo blood into the water supply. Kei's tennyo blood is awoken, but his body rejects it and he dies in Shuro's arms, whispering that they should be together always.

The anime contains a very condensed version (plus a little of book 13) of these events in episode 22 (which I personally think is a abysmally poor representation of their story).

Shuro
Shuro's story doesn't end after Kei's death. She leaves her celebrity lifestyle, dyes her hair black and returns to help Aya find Ceres' manna. She still lives as a guy, though. In book 13, it is revealed that her body is slowly rejecting tennyo blood, but to release Aya, who is trapped in the Kagami institute, she stages a last concert where she uses the power of her tennyo voice to mess up Kagami institute's electronical system and free Aya. She falters during her song and Kei reappears as a spirit to encourage her, giving her enough strength to finish the song before she finally dies.

I've long wanted to create a fanlisting for my favourite pairing, Shuro and Kei, so I've finally done it! Their tragic, bittersweet relationship is extremely moving, and till now, I can't read AnC6 without crying. This fanlising is my little tribute to them. :)

'Eternity' because I believe Shuro and Kei share an eternal love - before Kei died he asked her to stay with him forever.
